Norwegian Textile Variation No.9 by Lauren Harrington

Description & Details
This painting is from a series inspired by 19th century folk art, specifically Norwegian decorative textiles. The intention of the series is to explore contemporary color pallets, pattern and shape through digitally manipulating the image then reconstructing it on canvas through the use of hand cut stencils. I view folk art and craft with high esteem, holding reverence and a deep interest in art that was considered ‘woman’s work’; art typically relegated as craft, hobby or decoration. I believe this kind of work has a significant role in creating a unique visual narrative that bound culture and community together, creating a larger capacity for creativity and individuation across cultural lines.
