Originally created as a test surface for a larger commission on panel, Test Panel evolved into its own piece over time. Beginning in 2021, I periodically returned to this square over the duration of a year and a half as a way to retain and refine my focus while experiencing transitional moments in my life. Upon my return from a residency with Penland School of Craft in January 2023, I finally saw this piece more clearly and finished the painting within only a couple of quick sessions thereafter. After switching materials, working over a pre-existing varnish, and amplifying contrast through new paints, I eventually felt solid about where this piece, and I, was going. Currently, as I move towards a new body of work, Test Panel both acts as an anchor for my individualized style and ushers along a matured approach to my work, with forthcoming pieces in mind. This piece features acrylic, gouache, ink, wax pastel, watercolor, and graphite on Baltic birch with pine trim.
About the Artist: Cyd Gottlieb

Cyd Gottlieb is a multidisciplinary artist whose work centers on creative problem-solving through experiential, visual, and interpretive programming methods. Her abstract style, developed during recovery from a spinal cord injury, serves as a medium for processing emotions and bodily sensations. Gottlieb’s imagery explores introspective healing, using layers of paint and mixed media to guide viewers through a visual journey. Her artwork references the twists and turns of everyday life, creating a maze, a dance, a floor plan, a map, or an escape route for others to study and potentially follow.
Now, tapping into the root of why she makes art, Gottlieb dives deeper into intimate survival stories and leans into cultural concepts as she develops a new body of work, which has received direct support from the Ohio Arts Council. Career highlights include a residency fellowship with Penland School of Craft, contributions to texts published by Harvard University Press, solo exhibitions with the Burkholder Project (NE) and Gathered Glass (OH), and group shows across multiple states. Her work is part of Collector’s Corner at the Toledo Museum of Art. A self-taught artist, Gottlieb holds a BA in Hispanic Language and Literatures from Boston University.
