I have been making a series of lush, abundant ceramic forms that lurk somewhere between plant, creature, human. In these forms, I am interested in creating interior spaces, making a whole world inside a single being. I call these new objects “nectaries” and I’ve been thinking about how a nectary in a plant relates to a mother’s lap, a woman’s womb, a secret hiding place and to the ceramic vessel itself.
Lisa Farris has been working in Ceramics for many years, but it’s only recently that she’s been able to approach her practice in a more serious manner. In 2021, she was awarded an artist’s residency at the Hambidge Center in Rabun, Georgia. The intensity and joy of that experience, along with an empty nest, inspired Farris to earn her MFA In Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2024. Farris’s practice focuses on the strange seamlessness between human beings and the natural world. She sees her research and her making as an act of reconnecting with herself, finding the fearless girl who lived so fully in sync with nature and with her own creativity. In turn, her work is infused with world-building and joy.
