Description & Details
Pyrophytes are a type of plant whose seeds need fire in order to germinate. The intense heat of a fire cracks open the seed cones or hard kernels, allowing water to seep in and start the germination process. I love thinking about this form of resilience, the inherent precariousness, the sheer audacity to burn in order to go on living. My burning seed series is an exploration of contrasts -- dark with light, rough with refined, and always the forms exist between body and botany.
About the Artist: Lisa Farris

Lisa Farris has been working in Ceramics for many years, but it’s only recently that she’s been able to approach her practice in a more serious manner. In 2021, she was awarded an artist’s residency at the Hambidge Center in Rabun, Georgia. The intensity and joy of that experience, along with an empty nest, inspired Farris to earn her MFA In Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2024. Farris’s practice focuses on the strange seamlessness between human beings and the natural world. She sees her research and her making as an act of reconnecting with herself, finding the fearless girl who lived so fully in sync with nature and with her own creativity. In turn, her work is infused with world-building and joy.
